It all starts with a fuzzy idea, and then through the process of iteration and prototyping, it gets refined into reality.

Reimagining the modern sofa

A good project is always in response to addressing a need. During the pandemic, my sofa of the last 15 years finally broke and as I looked for a new one, it became apparent that my choices of replacements were lacking. The quality and character that was once found in antique and mid-century modern furniture, has been left in the past. This is where my personal challenge began: To design a unique sofa that combines high quality craftsmanship and my unique artistic style. A style that is inspired by figures and flowers and balances graceful forms with sensuous curves. A vision in which I embrace using digital processes like CAD and CNC production to create these one of a kind objects.

This project started in 2021 and finished in Aug 2025. Thanks to everyone who supported me a long the way!

Sofa being assembled in a woodworking shop, secured with clamps on a workbench.

November 2024- The springs are run, the upholstery is ordered and we did the final glue up!

December 2024 - A lot of fine sanding and patch work that is very tedious and involves filling gaps with resin and waiting 24 hrs before sanding it again… and repeat

January 2025- More sanding and looking at how the sofa cushions will sit on it. I changed the proportion from 4” to 5” and then had to adjust the height of the feet to accommodate it.

February 2025 - Leg days at the shop! I designed custom Stainless Steel mounting plates for the feet to turn them at an angle. I also installed screens into the bottom of the spring box to keep the cats out!

After many stain and finish samples I settled on the perfect combo! Dark Walnut Danish oil with a top coat of Waterlox! As Much as I am a purist about materials, I used the Danish oil with a tint so that the wood would remain darker over time. Fingers crossed on that!

March 2025- The finish line is in sight!
