Inspired by nature and form, Tabelscape No.1 combines art and function to crate this magnificent dining experience. Originally I was trying to create a surface that mimicked fabric being pulled down into a crevices, but as the design emerge the surface began to take on landscape of its own. There is also influence of car styling where the surfaces transform from hard edge definitions into softly rolling transitions of form.
As with each piece I do, I am constantly trying to develop my modeling techniques in the computer and later bring them to life by using the cnc machine to carve them as an extension of the hand. Once carved the pieces are painstakingly hand sanded to remove all tool marks and finished to reveal the true beauty of the work: an tactile exploration that is meant to be felt, a feast for the senses.
The table was shown at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in the 2018 show Craft Texas where it won the Award of Merit from Juror Jennifer Scallan - Curator for the Oklahoma Museum of Contemporary Craft and most recently at The Texas Furniture Makers Show 2019
The table first debuted at ICFF in 2012 where it was received and publicized internationally.
"The design itself evokes everything from a topographical map to a Georgia O'Keeffe painting, from Lucio Fontana's slit canvases to a fantastical door. " - excerpt from Core77 article.
Three more versions of the table including two coffee tables and a side table made of Corian.
